Children’s book author Irene Smalls writes about the people and places in her life. With 15 books published in 20 years, Smalls is also an entertainer and educator. Her unique storytelling presentations blend literacy, multi-sensory activities and movement to help students learn.
An author and educator, Irene needed to tell her business story to the teachers and librarians who decide which books children read in schools and libraries, and which guest presenters can deliver enriching presentations to student assemblies.
Irene attended a Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Arts’ workshop for artists on learning business skills, including marketing. With MassMOCA, Irene received a Mini-Grant to partially fund a new website, www.irenesmalls.com, that allows educators and parents to see and understand what Irene offers and feel confidence in booking her for a school visit.
The author of “Irene and the Big, Fine Nickel” has increased her bookings at schools, an important source of income as she starts work on her next book, “Hair Math,” creative non-fiction about the mathematics of hairstyles.
