Thomas O’Connor is Co-Founder and President of Baystate Wealth Management, LLC, an investment advisory firm located in Boston.

Mr. O’Connor grew up in Princeton, New Jersey and graduated from Princeton Day School in 1971.  O’Connor graduated cum laude from St. Lawrence University with a B.A. in Government in 1975, during which time he served as a goalie on the Men’s Division 1 Varsity Ice Hockey Team.  Upon graduation from St. Lawrence, Mr. O’Connor was drafted by the Kansas City Scouts of the NHL, who ultimately sent him to play for the Sioux City Musketeers.

O’Connor later attended the Albany Law School of Union University, where he graduated cum laude, Justinian Society, in 1979.  He was a member of the Albany Law Review.  He was published in 1978 and served as an Articles Editor in 1979.  Mr. O’Connor played Rugby (Scrum Half) at Albany Law and was the Runner Up in the national Giles Southerland Rich Moot Court Competition (Patent and Trademark) held in Washington, D.C. 

Following law school, Mr. O’Connor joined the Litigation Department of a Wall Street law firm in New York City called Rogers and Wells (William P. Rogers and Jack Wells) where he was an associate in the Litigation Department until 1981 when he joined Boston law firm Hale and Dorr (now Wilmer Hale) as a Litigation Associate.  He grew to become a Junior Partner and then a Senior Partner in the Litigation Department at Hale and Dorr.  He was Chairman of the Debtor/Creditor Practice Group and a member of the Securities Litigation Department and an adjunct litigator for the Commercial Law (Bankruptcy) Department.  O’Connor tried numerous cases in state and federal courts and ultimately became a member of the bar in Massachusetts, New York and Maine. 

Mr. O’Connor retired from Hale and Dorr in 2000 to start an investment advisory firm called Marathon Capital Group, which grew to approximately $700 million of assets under advisement and then sold the business in 2008 to Silvercrest Asset Management (ticker SAMG). 

As soon as the sale was completed, he left Marathon/Silvercrest and formed Baystate Wealth Management, LLC. Today the business has over $1 billion in assets under management.  He also serves as General Counsel to Baystate Financial Services, which is a sister entity.

After retiring from Hale and Dorr, and while working at Marathon Capital, in 2002, O’Connor co-founded a law firm in Massachusetts called O’Connor, Carnathan and Mack, LLC, where he acted as a founding partner of that firm until 2014, at which time he became “Of Counsel” and remains Of Counsel to the firm to this day.

O’Connor lives in Boston with his wife, Julie, and has two grown boys, one of whom lives and works in Boston and other one lives and works in New York.   Before moving to Boston, his family were residents of Swampscott, MA where Mr. O’Connor was on the Board of Tower School for approximately 10 years (serving as Chair for the last 4 years), coached Little League baseball and town lacrosse.  He remains a member of the Eastern Yacht Club, Kernwood Country Club, and John’s Island Club in Vero Beach, Florida.  Mr. O’Connor serves on the Board of the Baystate Financial Charitable Foundation, the Board of the Friends of Special Olympics, and is a past Corporate Chair for the ALS Society of Massachusetts.
